A hair shaft consists of three layers: cuticle, cortex and medulla. |
|
|
The cuticle is a transparent scale-like layer which protects the inner layers from friction and chemical
reagents: the cortex fiber is a paste-like layer of solid protein. It is very
venerable to chemical reagents. |
|
|
The cortex will be exposed when the cuticle is damaged and depilated. When that happens, the
cortex will be subjected to intrusions of external stimulations such as permanent and dye
solution, causing in repairable splitting and
shearing of the hair shafts. |
